U design students find canvasses in Uptown storefronts

From across Hennepin Avenue, something caught LoAnne Turner's eye as she waited to catch a Saturday movie with her girlfriends at the Landmark Uptown Theater.

"It was the colors that grabbed my attention," she said as she examined the window display of the clothing store Heartbreaker. "Then, of course, the shoes. It's beautiful."

The display, a tea party complete with a place setting serving up shoes instead of tea, was part of a University of Minnesota class project.

The women were shocked to learn the display had been entirely designed and constructed by students.

"I hope they got an A," Turner said.

For the third consecutive year, students enrolled in the Visual Merchandising class through the Department of Design, Housing and Apparel created 14 storefront window presentations for Uptown businesses through a partnership between the University, the American Heart Association and the Uptown Association of Minneapolis.

$5 sunglasses alert: ragstock and heartbreaker

Examiner.com"Looking for cheap, stylish sunglasses? Find both at Heartbreaker and Ragstock stores. Both stores boast a large selection of shades for just $5.00. Choose from one of the many styles and colors. You can afford to get a few pair at that great price. Keep one in your purse and one in the car, so you'll never be without protection in the sun. Most shades have a sticker that claims "100% UV protection" on them. Visit both locations in Uptown, where the stores are within a couple blocks of each other. Ragstock has five locations within the Twin Cities (and a few in outlying cities), and Heartbreaker has three locations in the city."

shopping + style: the best of the twin cities

Mpls St. Paul Magazine"This is the go-to place for cheap chic tops, handbags, scarves, and jewelry. The denim selection is comprehensive, with styles by Hudson, Joe's Jeans, and 7 For All Mankind. The basement at the Minneapolis location offers a small selection of menswear and more than 150 styles of women's shoes."

City Pages Best Of 2008

best women's clothing store

City Pages Award"Uptown offers a wealth of shopping opportunities, between Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, and the maze of vintage stores. The problem is that a few swipes of a nearly maxed-out Visa can leave a girl looking like a fashion plate from Any-town, USA, with tiredly ironic T-shirts and played-out plaid. For a truly original look, head to Heartbreaker on Hennepin Avenue. This spacious, two-floor shopping oasis offers fashion-forward trends of the moment. Browse through fun and flirty ruffled blouses, satin corset tops, and racks of strappy sandals in Heartbreaker's large shoe collection. A perfect fit for ladies in their teens to early 30s, the store offers fashions for all budgets. Snap up those $5 camis, and if that pocketbook is exploding, consider the $190 skinny jeans that are worth the price because they fit just right. There's even a small collection of vintage jewelry. Don't feel like fighting off those underfed Uptown trendsetters? This local chain also has locations in Richfield and Tonka Bay."

this ain't no country club... this is l.a. and here's what you wear when you're there!

"Ivan Rafowitz was musical director and keyboardist for the band Lipps, Inc., best known for "Funkytown," the 1980 hit single that put Minneapolis sound on the map. Ivan and his family sport the latest L.A. looks from Heartbreaker, the hip boutique in Uptown, Minneapolis, Tonka Bay, and Richfield, MN.

Ivan wears a slinky vintage polyester shirt originally from Sears ($20).

Tina's looking glam in a halter top ($20) stretchy knee-length leggings ($14) and de riguer white sunglasses ($7).

Mia, a talented singer, wears a tube dress ($20) black leggings ($14), peep toe sling backs ($22), and carries a hip green driving hat ($12).

Adam, a guitar player, wears a John Lennon edition "You Are Here" T-shirt ($39.50)."

Mpls St. Paul Magazine"N&C chose to shop for a teenage girl. Since guessing sizes can always be a challenge, buy fashion accessories. At Heartbreaker, in Uptown, they selected a mix of bronze (the new gold) accessories-all sure to please any fashionista in the making. Belt, $12-$14. Bracelet, $4-$8."

shopping usa: heartbreaker

Elle Girl"Want trends on the cheap? This store has a new location. Both are jammed full of inexpensive items with L.A. style: flare-leg pants, low-rise jeans, wedge sandals, makeup and body jewelry. With a little luck, you can score a whole outfit under 50 bucks."

City Pages Best Of 2005

best women's clothing store

City Pages Award"After overdosing on pan-ethnic hippie swag at Calhoun Square, seek refuge at Heartbreaker and revel in the unapologetic trendiness of their merchandise. Sometimes you want to wear a scarlet tunic with leg-o'-mutton sleeves, sometimes you want to wear a fitted tee emblazoned with "Diamond Dogs"-era David Bowie, sometimes you want to wear Lucite-soled stilettos that require backup medical coverage. Whatever the case, if you want to look hot in the Paris Hilton sense, Heartbreaker's got you (un)covered. This spacious Uptown storefront houses every element for the perfect dump-him ensemble: shoes, bags, and of course, those signature Heartbreaker tops that accentuate the, um, collarbones. Best of all, it's sex on a shoestring budget; you can score a complete outfit here for less than a meal at Mission. Kit yourself out in these threads, and you might find yourself breaking hearts with impunity. That Guatemalan rollneck sweater you bought at the head shop might be comfy, but come on, live a little! Those exquisite collarbones deserve to be seen."
